This is when new Travelodge will be complete in Mansfield town centre

Plans to open a new 63-bed Travelodge in Mansfield are nearing completion after developers announced it will be finished next month.

The new hotel, based at the former Gala Bingo site off St Peters' Way, has been under construction since summer 2019 and builders have remained on-site throughout the pandemic.

The hotel is expected to bring at least 15 jobs to the town, and will be the first branded hotel to make its way into Mansfield town centre.

The four-storey building will feature three floors of hotel rooms, with the ground floor set to make space for the hotel foyer and three retail units.

It is unclear which businesses will take on the retail space.

However, contractors for the project say they plan to have the building finished in October 2020 - just weeks away.

Paul Taylor, a spokesperson for the project's main contractor Harris cm, said: "[This is a] £4 million design and build contract to deliver a 63-bed hotel project for operation by Travelodge.

"The hotel accommodation is located in the upper three storeys of a four-storey block, with the ground floor being allocated for the hotel foyer and three separate retail units.

"The works, which commenced in the summer of 2019, are scheduled for completion in October 2020.

"Construction was undertaken throughout the Covid pandemic, in accordance with a strictly monitored health and safety regime in order to maintain the health and safety of our workforce at all times."

Travelodge has previously been vocal in its view that the new hotel will provide a £2 million "annual boost" to Mansfield's economy.

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman said: "The local economy is growing at pace and with increasing visitor numbers to the area; there is a shortage of good quality and great value accommodation to meet customer demand.

"Therefore, there is a need for a Travelodge in the heart of Mansfield.

"This is great news for the local economy as our research shows annually our customers will spend on average double their room rate with local businesses during their stay.

"This can equate to an annual boost of £2 million for the local economy."

The Travelodge is one of four potential hotels planned within Mansfield town centre, with firm ARBA Group submitting plans in May 2020 for a separate 100-bed site.

The plans, part of the council-backed 'Stockwell Gateway' development at the former bus station, also include a number of retail units.

Mansfield Town Football Club is also planning to open a Hampton by Hilton hotel at its One Call Stadium in the future, while a fourth hotel has been earmarked for the former Courtaulds Factory off Quaker Way.
