This is when and how benefit payments will be paid over Easter

The Easter weekend is an exciting time for many - but for those on benefits it can be incredibly stressful too.

On top of costly school holidays for parents,  payment dates also change when they fall on a bank holiday.

This year Good Friday and Easter Monday falls on Friday, April 19, and Monday, April 22.

If a payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday, claimants are usually paid on the working day before.

This means they will have to make their money last a few more days at the end of the month.

This is when some of the main benefits in the UK will be paid over Easter:

Universal credit

People on universal credit say they have been beset by problems - and pushed into poverty - from the start (Stoke Sentinel)

Universal credit - which is the biggest change to the welfare state in a generation - was fully   rolled out to all Jobcentres  in Wales in December to replace six other benefits with a single monthly payments .

Figures show that in December there were 76,072 people claiming universal credit across Wales , an increase of more than 8,000 the previous month.

The benefit is usually paid every month, so if you're due to be paid on Good Friday or Easter Monday you will get your payment on Thursday, April 18.

Child Benefit

Child benefit is a payment that you get if you are responsible for one or more children under the age of 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training).

There is no limit to how many children you can claim for, but only one person can get child benefit for a child.

Child benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or a Tuesday, but single parents or people getting certain other benefits are able to have the money paid weekly.

If your child benefit payment is due on April 22, you can expect the money to be paid on April 18 for Easter .

Tax credits

Council tax in RCT could be going up by 3.6% next year (Dominic Lipinski/PA Wire)

There are two types of tax credits - working tax credits and child tax credits.

The amount a claimant gets in tax credits depends on their income as well as other factors such as whether they have children.

To get working tax credits you need to be working at least 30 hours a week if you are aged 25 to 59.

However, single parents responsible for a child need to work at least 16 hours.

Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit - which are paid weekly or every four weeks - are being replaced by Universal Credit. Over Easter, tax credits that are due to be paid on April 19 or April 22 will be paid early on April 18.

People on universal credit could be missing out on £1,200 in free money

Jobseeker’s Allowance

Universal credit has been rolled out to every jobcentre in Wales (PA)

Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is paid to people who are unemployed and are looking for work.

The amount of JSA you get depends on factors such as age, income and savings.

JSA is usually paid every two weeks so, if you are normally paid on either April 19 or 22, then you can expect the money to reach you on April 18.

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

(David Williams)

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is for people who have an illness, health condition or disability that makes it difficult or impossible to work.

The amount of ESA people get depends on the person, and the assessment phase for this benefit usually lasts for 13 weeks. However, it could be "much longer" , Citizens' Advice Bureau has previously said.

ESA is usually paid every two weeks so, if you are normally paid on either April 19 or 22, then you can expect the money to reach you on April 18.
