This is what will happen when Prince Philip Mountbatten dies

As concerns for the health of Prince Philip Mountbatten grow, considerations are being taken into his funeral.

The Duke of Edinburgh is 97 years old and retired from Royal duties in August 2017.

He has been admitted to hospital for planned surgery on his hip, two days after he pulled out of the traditional Maundy service at Windsor Castle.

The Greek-born royal has been married to the country's queen for 71 years and a constant companion on her many travels, visits and events she has attended.

He is the longest-reigning consort in British history but rumours have started to circulate this morning that he has passed away after a string of illnesses and problems in recent years.

Who is Prince Phillip?

Born on June 10, 1921 in Corfu in Greece, he was born into the Greek and Danish Royal families. He was educated in Fance, Germany and the UK before joining the British Royal Navy and served with the Mediterranean and Pacific fleets during the Second World War.

He met 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth in July 1939 and in 1946 asked King George for her hand in marriage. The following year he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, adopted the surname Mountbatten and became a British subject.

Philip and Elizabeth were married in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey, recorded and broadcast to 200 million people around the world.

He is member of over 780 organisations and serves as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award for people aged 14 to 24.

He is the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the oldest-ever male member of the Royal Family.

He is well known for his straight forward and down to earth manner, with his jokes and gaffes often causing the raising an eyebrow or two in the media and the public.

What will happen after Prince Phillip's death?

The Monarchy follows strict protocols on the death of senior Royal family members and with its two most senior reaching such a long age, plans have been in the making for a long time.

It is expected that the BBC will make the announcement of the Prince's death. It is believed if he died peacefully, it will be announced at 8am the following morning.

As is his character, Prince Philip has already requested that people not make a "fuss" over his funeral and said it isn't necessary for his body to be lying-in-state at Westminster Hall, according to Marie Claire.

His funeral is still expected to be a huge affair but according to Parliamentary documents, there is no "official process" for "deciding when a state funeral should be held for a person other than the Sovereign."

It is expected he will be buried in Frogmore Gardens on the grounds of the Windsor Castle.

Most other British royal family members have been buried in Westminster Abbey and St. George's Chapel, but it's likely Philip selected Frogmore Gardens because of its significance to his family.

It has been reported that the Queen will have an eight-day period of mourning meaning state affairs will be put on hold.
