This is what we thought of the newly launched vegan steak bake from Greggs

More and more people are giving veganism a try as veganuary gets underway.

So big name food chains like Pizza Hut, Costa and McDonald's have launched meat alternatives to give those who are permanently vegan and those just trying the lifestyle a bit more choice.

After the success of the vegan sausage roll, Greggs is once again improving the vegan options on the high street by introducing an alternative to another one of its iconic bakes.

The vegan steak bake is made with the same iconic pastry, just without the egg glaze.

It's filled with fungi-based Quorn pieces, onions and meat-free gravy and is supposed to offer vegans and vegetarians a glimpse of what the meat steak bake tastes like.

So we put the newly launched Greggs snack to the test.

Here are the verdicts of a vegetarian and a meat-eater.

Vegetarian verdict

I was worried it was going to be a  bit too 'meaty' - I was expecting big chunks of something chewy and slimy, trying to be steak, which I did not fancy at all.

In fact, the filling is a vegan mince, with lots of gravy.

The nicely savoury flavour is one that long-term vegans and vegetarians will be familiar with. It's a bit like the old Linda McCartney pie filling.

I'm not sure meat-eaters will be impressed though. They'll probably say 'there's nothing to get your teeth into'.

It's nice enough. I'd buy one if they'd sold out of vegan sausage rolls.

Meat-eater verdict

Eating vegetarian or vegan alternatives is not something I do at all.

If meat is an option, I will always pick it.

So before trying the bake I was dubious and thought it really would taste of nothing at all and the filling would have a dry, rubbery texture.

Contrary to my vegetarian colleague's meat-eater thoughts, I actually really enjoyed it.

The gravy didn't taste any different to what I would normal eat, the pastry was crispy enough without the egg glaze and the Quorn didn't have the horrible texture that I was expecting.

I tried a lump of the meat substitute on its own and that wasn't so great as it didn't have much of a taste.

But surrounded by onions, covered with gravy and cased in delicious pastry the Quorn had the same effect that meat has in one of Greggs' original steak bakes.

I was very pleasantly surprised by my first ever vegan experience.

Can I get one?

The vegan steak bakes launched in 1,300 Greggs stores today (January 2).

If your closest branch isn't one of them, 700 more shops will get the roll-out of vegan steak bakes on January 16.

The pastry costs £1.55 and contains 380 calories.
