This is what Wales star Nicky Smith's strange finger celebration was all about

Wales prop Nicky Smith doesn't score many tries, so the celebration we witnessed after he crossed the whitewash for the first Welsh try against Uruguay may well become a collectors' item on the international stage.

Smith barged his way over in the 17th minute to grab his first try for his country in what turned out to be a somewhat frustrating day for Wales on their way to a 35-13 win against the minnows.

Nevertheless, Smith's peculiar gesture after scoring caught the eye of a number of Welsh supporters as he appeared to do something rather strange with his fingers.

Smith was actually making a 'W' and 'M' gesture, which stands for "Waunarlwydd Massive".

Waunarlwydd is the Swansea village Smith is from, and the gesture has also been used by fellow Wales star and Waunarlwydd product Liam Williams in the Fiji match.

Smith still has strong links with Waun RFC, and has actually been coaching the youth team for the past two years while playing for the Ospreys.

Speaking about the Specsavers League One West Central club, he said: "I can’t say enough about Waun. It’s a great honour to represent the club on the international stage. It’s a fantastic club that I owe so much to and I’m sure Liam Williams would say the same.

“I’ll go straight back into it when I get back. The first year we only had about ten boys involved but we’ve worked on the transition of players from our junior section and we now have good numbers training and playing regularly.

“We’re like a second family at Waunarlwydd and that never leaves you. Even if players go on to play for other clubs, there will always be a welcome at the club to come back and play in the future or just socialise.”

It's wonderful to see Smith's bond with his local club, but given this was his first try in 34 caps, it seems team-mate Williams is the more likely of the two to be promoting the "Waun Massive" for the rest of the tournament.
