This is what UK storms after Storm Dennis will be called - is your name on the list?

Following the destruction caused by Storm Ciara last weekend, the UK is now in the midst of Storm Dennis.

Forecasters have warned this storm is likely to cause more destruction than Ciara, ominously referring to it as a 'bomb cyclone' due to its rapidly strengthening nature.

If you're wondering why each storm in the UK has a different name, and how these names are decided, you're not alone.

The Met Office chooses the names but it asks for members of the public to help by making suggestions every year.

Why are storm names chosen?

The service decided to start naming storms in alphabetical order back in 2014, in the hope that doing so would make people more aware of them and how dangerous they can be.

It said following the progress of each storm would be easier on the TV, radio and on social media if they have a name.

The first windstorm to be named was Abigail on November 10, 2015.

The names of storms in 2020 were revealed by the Met Office in September 2019 - and there are some interesting inclusions on the list.
