This is what to do if you're arrested while on holiday abroad

Most people enjoy their annual holiday abroad without getting into any bother with the police.

However if you do end up in handcuffs then there are a number of things you need to do that apply to whichever country or city you are in.

And while this prospect may seem far fetched, you could find yourself in trouble if you're unaware of the local laws and practices.

If the worst does happen here is what the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise.

Firstly, upon arrest, make sure that the local British embassy or consulate is notified, as the local authorities must do this.

Secondly, ask family or friends to contact the local British consulate or the Global Casework team at the FCO back in the UK in London.

Their contact number is on +44 (0)20 7008 1500.

Staff at the consulate will try and do what they can to help you, but they won't be able to get you out of jail or help pay for a lawyer.

What they can do is contact you in prison, and even visit you if needed. They can alert your family and friends if you wish, and pass on messages.

They're useful in providing information about the local legal system, for example whether legal aid is available, and provide a list of local lawyers and translators.

The consulate will inform you about the legal procedures thereon from arrest, including prosecution, remand, bail, and appeal.

You can find more information about the FCO services here.

As well as the UK government consulate service, you could also get in touch with Prisoners Abroad - a UK charity which provides advice and support for British citizens in prison and their families.

The charity, who work collaboratively with the FCO, are sometimes able to provide limited financial help depending on the situation and support needed.

You can read more information about the charity here.
