This is what Metrolink say about the latest outburst of violence on a Manchester tram

Metrolink is beefing up patrols after a passenger was filmed 'going berserk' on a tram.

The man was seen throwing rocks at passengers and headbutting windows before getting off and standing on the tracks in front of the tram.

A passenger was hit in the face with a rock during the violent incident, which happened on the Rochdale and Oldham line travelling towards the city centre on Wednesday night.

Other passengers were left in fear after the man became increasingly agitated and stared shouting and becoming violent towards himself

Witnesses said the man appeared to get in an argument with a woman and two men he was travelling with, shortly after leaving the Failsworth tram stop.

He eventually got off at Newton Heath and stood in front of the tram, before coming back onto the platform and smashing two windows by punching them.

TfGM has apologised to passengers and transport bosses say that more members of staff will now be put on patrol on the trams and platforms.

The latest incident comes two days after Charlotte Green, a local democracy reporter for the M.E.N, was sexually harassed as she travelled home from work on the tram.

Footage captured a man continually pestering Charlotte and making lewd remarks. The incident is now being investigated by police.

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “I’d like to apologise to those caught up in this incident, which left at least one person with minor injuries and a number of passengers no doubt frightened.

“We work with the operator and wider TravelSafe Partnership to try and prevent incidents of crime and antisocial behaviour from occurring and have recently introduced route-based customer service teams that provide a visible presence across the network alongside our dedicated security teams – which were in place throughout the day yesterday up until the last tram.

“Nobody wants or expects these sorts of things – which are quite frankly unacceptable – to happen on their journey and in light of recent incidents on services operating along the line, I’ve asked the operator for an increased staff presence to be put in place.”
