This is what caused the 'poo' smell across Bristol

The cause of a mysterious "poo smell" which was reported across Bristol yesterday may have been revealed.

Many residents across the city, from Windmill Hill to  Frenchay and Stoke Gifford, reported the unpleasant odour on Friday morning (August 30).

The stench was so bad that the term 'Bristol Smell' was being widely searched for on Google.

Bristol Live court reporter Geoff Bennett said the smell was "akin to the sour stink of a dustbin" while others said it stank of "dog poo/sewage".

Bristol Live  digital editor Sian David said: "I was on the M2 bus when I first noticed it at around 8.15am.

"The bus stopped outside Temple Meads and that's where I first noticed it. It was definitely a sewage-y odour."

While there were many theories as to what the Bristol Smell could be, there could now be an answer as to what caused it.

A farmer working near Dundry Hill, who wished to remain anonymous, said it's currently the season of muck spreading, the agricultural practice of spraying fields with liquid manure.

"It's certainly the season for muck spreading at the moment," she said. "There's only a small window for it every year.

"It's a problem of having the city close to the countryside.

"Bristol is lucky to be surrounded by the countryside.

"It's a very green city but there's going to be a little crossover sometimes."

We have contacted Bristol City Council for a comment.
