This is what caused the bizarre smells of bacon and coffee across Bristol this week

It looks like the mystery of a strange smell in Bristol earlier this week has now been solved.

Residents began noticing the unusual aroma on Tuesday and Wednesday, but were unsure where it is coming from.

People living in Clifton, Lawrence Weston, Shirehampton, Westbury-on-Trym, Hartcliffe and Brislington have all reported noticing a weird smell - although there were differing opinions on what exactly it is they were getting a whiff off.

There were claims of burnt toast, coffee, bacon, chicken noodles and even McCoy’s Flame Grilled Steak crisps.

Bristol Live were inundated with queries about the bizarre smell, mainly from people asking what is causing it.

And now finally we think we might have solved the mystery.

One person has got in touch to say they think the smell originated in Avonmouth from the flavouring factory Plant-Ex Ingredients Ltd.

The company’s headquarters - which launched in 2010 - is based off Access 18. Inside they turn raw products into natural colours and flavourings in liquid or powder form.

According to Lawrence Weston resident Kirsty - who also works in Avonmouth - the smell can be “really strong” sometimes, but she said she doesn’t mind when they are making sweet flavours such as candyfloss.

Plant-Ex Ltd have been contacted for comment.

This is not the first time a mystery smell has plagued residents. In August last year people in Emersons Green reported a mysterious sewage odour dubbed 'the Bristol hum' and in July people living in Avonmouth and Shirehampton reported a similar smell that was believed to have been a result of the hot weather.

North Somerset has . Once a year the smell takes over the district, as a result of the process of concentrating blackcurrants at the factory.
