This is what armed police were doing in Norris Green today

Another ammunitions dump was found on Merseyside after police descended on the loop line area of Norris Green today.

Matrix search teams, armed police and forensic officers arrived at the roundabout for Utting Avenue East and Broadway this morning to carry out a search of the area around the disused railway line known locally as the "Ralla."

After spending several hours at the scene, they seized shotgun and handgun ammunition, which will be forensically recovered for further enquiries.

A nearby shop worker said: "The police vehicles were already here when I arrived this morning. Everyone's been coming in and asking questions about what they were doing here.

"I saw the forensics officers with their gloves on and moving stuff out of the way with sticks while they searched an area on the bridge where the old railway line used to be.

"It's good to know that the ammunition will be out of circulation and off the streets."

The latest find came hot on the heels of two guns and ammunition being recovered in Highgate Street, Edge Hill , yesterday, and two guns being found during a stop and search operation in Wavertree on Wednesday evening.

Matrix Inspector Chris Barnes said: "This week has seen several dangerous weapons and pieces of ammunition taken off our streets, and we want the momentum to continue to make your streets safer each and every day.

"Every weapon or ammunition means a criminal or gang with less capability to intimidate, injure and cause damage.

"People in the communities affected can and do help, so I want to thank those who have come forward recently and say to anyone else, do the same and take the power from these criminals’ hands.

"If you know or suspect anything about the storage, movement and use of guns and ammunition, speak to us and we will take action while treating your information sensitively."
