Sadio Mane admits he has no explanation for why he is suffering the "worst season" of his career with Liverpool.
Mane has struggled for form as the Reds have slumped among the also-rans in the battle for a top-four finish after winning the Premier League title in dominant fashion last year.
While the Senegalese has notched 14 goals in 44 outings this season, only five have come in the top flight since October while his opener in the 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday was his first goal at Anfield in 2021.
Mane was one of several Liverpool players to test positive for coronavirus earlier this campaign, while the forward hasn't had a lengthy summer rest in almost four years.
And he revealed a series of medical tests have failed to determine any physical explanation for his drop in standards.
"This is the worst season of my career," said, speaking to former Liverpool forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle on French media outlet Canal Plus. "I have to admit it.
"If you ask me what is wrong I will struggle to give you an answer. Personally I don't know.
"I have always tried to be positive, whether things are going well or badly. I question myself all the time.
"I even underwent a test to take a look at my body. Am I eating the right foods, or has everything changed? But they checked the test results, and everything is fine.
"I need to understand that in life there are ups and downs. I will keep on working hard - and perhaps in time this situation will pass."
