This is the 'very sad' moment a Marks and Spencer store was dismantled letter by letter

Shoppers watched on with sadness as Marks and Spencer was dismantled letter by letter as it closed its doors for the final time in Northwich .

The branch is one of hundreds of stores across the UK that are set to shut , due to an accelerated closure programme by the retailers.

More than 1,000 employees are said to have been at risk - with store closures in Buxton as well as Huddersfield, Rotherham and Hull.

Footage shows the Northwich branch being dismantled just after closing on Saturday afternoon.

Workers can be dismantling the notorious black lettering, leaving the shop front looking completely bare.

Hundreds of shoppers took to Facebook to share their memories of the store and express their sadness about the closure of the high-street retailer.

Tony Drinkwater said: "Very sad I only come to Northwich to shop at M&s and have been since they moved into the Sainbury's empty shop, all the good stores are closing.

Pam Lennie wrote: "Such a shame! I'm sure it will be missed by many."

Shree Nathan said: "Did shopping in there two weeks before. So many beautiful memories of my first time moving into Northwich years before... so sad and awful loss."

Claire Hallworth said: "Heartfelt best wishes go to the staff who must be devastated."

A total of 47 M&S stores have now shut as part of the shake-up.
