Cranberry sauce is a Thanksgiving staple for many families in the United States. However, one Michigan woman can’t believe her eyes when she opens the cans of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce she needed for her meal.
TikToker Jasmine (@jasmine_hun) shows seven cans of the cranberry sauce on her counter. Two cans have already been pried open with a kitchen knife.
She brings the camera closer to show that instead of the thick, red jelly she expected, the cans contain yellowish liquid. The TikToker stabs another can with the knife, only to find that the third can also contains the mysterious liquid instead of cranberry sauce.
In the background, another woman yells, “Make a video! They’re gonna pay me!”
The entire family gathers around the counter in disbelief to check out the defective cans. Since posting on Nov. 28, the video has garnered over 10.6 million views and over 30,000 comments.
Why are Ocean Spray cranberry sauce cans filled with water?
Jasmine isn’t the only shopper to find liquid in their cans of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving. On Facebook, another woman shows herself opening a can of the sauce, only to find the same yellowish liquid. She notes that all four cans of cranberry sauce were defective.
An X user also posts, tagging Ocean Spray, “Why !!! Did I buy 8 cans of water!!!??? With a cranberry sauce label on it? It’s not Thanksgiving without a TURKEY AND CRANBERRY SAUCE !!!!” Ocean Spray’s official X account comments under his post, asking him to reach out to their customer service line.
According to a PEOPLE report, Ocean Spray says it is aware of the situation and has reached out to customers who shared the defective cans online.
Ocean Spray tells PEOPLE, “[We are] aware of a few reports about cans containing water instead of cranberry sauce, and we’re looking into how this may have happened.”
The statement continues, “Millions of families enjoyed their cranberry sauce this holiday season, but even one can of sauce not meeting expectations matters to us.”
However, the company does not share a further explanation for why the cans contained water. The Mary Sue reached out to Ocean Spray via email for further comment.
How did viewers respond to the cranberry sauce-less cans?
In the comments, viewers joke about the contents of the Ocean Spray cranberry sauce cans.
“It’s Ocean Spray and what else would it be? That’s fresh sea water in there duhhhh,” one writes.
A second quips, “Ocean spray said taste the ocean instead.”
“You bought the diabetic, low-cal, hydro-injected Cranberry Sauce cans,” another jokes.
Others make jabs at the TikToker’s method of opening the cans with a knife, suggesting that that’s the real problem in the video.
“The chemical reaction when you use a can opener is what causes the liquid to congeal and turn into ‘cranberry sauce,'” a viewer writes sarcastically.
“It’s because you opened it upside down. If you opened it the other side, it would’ve been cranberries,” another comments.
