A hairdressers in Tameside has been badly damaged after reports that a car ploughed into the shop front.

Shocking photos show the front windows of the hair and beauty salon in Hyde town centre, completely smashed in.

Broken glass can be seen on the pavement outside and the entrance to the shop appears to be destroyed.

Witnesses say they saw a vehicle crash into the shop on Corporation Street on Saturday afternoon.

GMP say they have not received any reports of injuries.

A police cordon is currently in place at the scene whilst an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is carried out.

Tameside Council told road users to avoid the area if possible.

In a tweet, Tameside Places said: "Following a police incident Oldham Street and Corporation Street Hyde will be reduced to a single carriageway, please avoid the area if possible."

Councillor for Hyde Werneth, Phil Chadwick confirmed that Tameside council had completed an inspection of the building to ensure the structure is safe - ahead of the Tour of Tameside events tomorrow.

The finale of the four-day sports festival is due to end with a seven-mile race through Hyde town centre and the surrounding area, before finishing outside the Town Hall on Market Street.

A GMP spokesperson confirmed: "Police were called at 16.50 hours to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and shop window.

"We do not yet know the motivation at this stage and there is likely to be a ongoing police presence in the area whilst officers look into that."
