This is the shocking wreckage after car went over cliff-edge - but amazingly the driver survived

This is the moment the wreckage of a car was recovered after a driver plunged over a cliff in South Shields.

The driver, although severely hurt, was not thought to have life-threatening injuries and has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Once most of the emergency services had left the scene, the complex recovery operation to retrieve the car took place.

The car had landed on the rocks, but very close to the high tides.

A winch was attached to the badly damaged vehicle and it was dragged along the rocks before being slowly pulled up to the top of the cliff.

The full extent of the damage could be seen as the white car was brought back to the clifftop.

Police officers remained on the scene and a cordon was put in place while the car was being moved.

Northumbria Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the cliff fall.

A number of emergency services including the fire brigade and ambulances were called to Frenchman's Bay at around 7.30am on Sunday, before a RNLI crew were able to reach the injured man and pull him out of the car.

He was taken into a lifeboat and then handed over to paramedics on shore.

He was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
