This is the scene of destruction after an eight-car smash

A man has been taken to hospital following an eight-car smash in Atherton.

Tyldesley Road was closed for several hours on Tuesday night while emergency services attended the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are not yet clear, however a number of the vehicles involved were stationary at the time.

One man was cut free from one of the cars by fire crews .

His injuries were described as 'minor'. He was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital to be checked over.

Photos showing the aftermath of the collision were later shared on social media.

Debris and broken glass can be seen scattered across the road.

A spokesman for GMP said they were called to scene at around 9.45am. Drivers present stayed at the scene and no arrests have been made.

The crash involved a red Seat, a white Citroen DS3, a silver Nissan, black Peugeot, black Vauxhall Corda, blue Ford, blue Mitsubishi Colt and a blue Hyundai.

"One minor injury was reported to police," they added.

"Emergency services attended.

"Tyldesley Road was closed whilst investigation work was carried out but this has since reopened."

GMFRS said: "Two fire engines from Leigh and Atherton and the technical response unit and major rescue unit from Leigh attended the incident

"One person was removed from a vehicle. Colleagues from GMP and NWAS were also in attendance."
