This is the reason for every crane you can see in Swansea city centre

If you look around the centre of Swansea you're bound to spot a tall crane towering up into the sky.

Each of these represents construction activity as development takes place across the city centre.

The timelapse video at the top of this article, which was filmed by Peter Ryan, captures work on one of the sites in SA1 taking shape.

But why are the cranes there? Here's the story behind every crane you can see in the city.

This site is being developer to cater for  780 students in a 17-storey tower and adjoining block, with the aim of having it open for business by the 2021 academic year.

As well as students, commercial tenants will occupy two units nearby.

Fusion Students is the firm behind the £65m-plus scheme, which is hoped to bring "life and vitality" to High Street.

Kings Roads, SA1

After a lengthy planning wrangle and a change of site owner, the £45 million development on the banks of the River Tawe will eventually be home to 645 students.

The Crown Student Living scheme will be nine storeys at its highest, and host a gym, small cinema and canteen.

It will cater mainly for overseas students, and be completed by September, 2021.

St David’s site, Morfa Road

This new 245-bed building is the final phase of the St David’s student accommodation complex.

The St David's development, flanked by New Cut Road, Pottery Street and Morfa Road, has a gym and courtyard.

The final phase will have ensuite rooms, and will be completed by September this year.
