Spain is Bristolians’ favourite winter destination, flight data has revealed.
A total of 218,714 people flew between Bristol Airport and mainland Spain last December, January and February, making it the most popular place to visit for Bristolians last winter.
The number of people flying to and from the country is soaring, having increased from 187,756 in the winter of 2017/18.
The rise in visitors from Bristol to Spain has largely been driven by the number of people travelling to Seville, the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region that is famous for flamenco dancing.
Seville airport saw more than 13,000 passengers going to and from Bristol last winter, compared to none the year before.
Flights are now also going from Bristol to Murcia International Airport, Valencia and Lieida, which is contributing to the increase.
The second-most popular country for Bristolians to visit on a winter break was the Canary Islands, which saw 129,508 passengers - down from 139,505.
It was followed by Ireland (113,183), Poland (104,821) and the Netherlands (101,496).
Overall, the number of people flying to and from Bristol Airport increased by eight per cent last winter, rising from 1.2 million passengers in 2017/18 to 1.3 million last winter.
As well as Spain, Italy and France also saw significant increases, and the number of people flying to and from Cyprus and Bulgaria has soared.
Portugal and India also saw significant increases.
Meanwhile, places like Belgium, Lithuania and Barbados appear to be falling out of favour, with visitor numbers falling last year.
