This is the most expensive mattress topper we've ever tested − it's also one of the best

Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper on a bed.

The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper transformed the feel of my guest bed for the better. Let me explain: a couple of years ago, I bought a new mattress for our guest room. Almost instantly, I regretted the purchase: I felt that the mattress was too soft, and I've heard similar complaints from friends and family. I knew something had to change but I couldn't stomach the thought of buying a brand new bed so soon.

Enter, the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper. Filled with natural latex, this mattress topper is springy and responsive enough to toughen up my old bed. I tested it out in the guest room for just over a month and I loved it. I recently had a few returning guests to stay and they each said how much better they slept with the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper.

I'm part of a sleep product testing team here at H&G. Together, we've slept on some of the world's best mattress toppers. I've tested my fair share of toppers from some of the best specialist sleep stores, so I know what I'm looking for in a mattress topper: breathable materials, enhanced support, and a reasonable price point.

Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper review

I'm happy to report that the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper excels in (almost) all areas. It's filled with natural latex, which is springy, responsive, and plenty breathable, but bumps up the price of this premium topper to $995. I slept seriously well on the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper, but even I would struggle to justify that price.

Who would the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper suit?

  • Anyone who wants to extend the life of their mattress: that's the whole point of a premium mattress topper.
  • Anyone who wants to alter the feel of their bed: investing in a good mattress topper is a quick and easy way to elevate your sleep experience. The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper is on the firmer side, so it would be ideal for toughening up a soft, sagging mattress.
  • Hot sleepers: the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper is filled with organic latex, which is naturally cooling and highly breathable. It also happens to last a lot longer than traditional memory foam or feather toppers.
  • Sustainable shoppers: the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress is Topper is made from organic materials which are good for your skin and kind to the planet. It's worth noting that this mattress topper isn't vegan, as it contains organic wool. Vegan shoppers should consider the Avocado Vegan Mattress Topper, which uses cotton instead of wool.

What's it like to sleep on the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper?

Firmness

Saatva says that their latex topper provides 'buoyant, pressure-free support', close to the feeling of a pillow-top mattress. I found this description to be accurate. The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper provided just enough firmness that I didn't feel as though I were sinking into the mattress. If you sleep on your side, you might appreciate a softer surface, such as the Helix Plush Mattress Topper

Although firm, the topper responds well to movement and provides exceptional pain and pressure relief. The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper struck me as the best of both worlds, with a great combination of softness and support. I never once woke up with aches and pains after sleeping on the topper.

Breathability

Saatva says that their natural latex is much more breathable than synthetic substances, such as memory foam. Plus, this topper features vented airflow channels that enhance breathability.

I can confirm that the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper kept me cool at night.  I was running a fever one night while testing the mattress and still slept pretty well, as the mattress topper worked to dissipate heat and wick moisture. With that said, it isn't quite as cooling as the Viscosoft Copper Mattress Topper.

Motion isolation

If you share a bed with a pet or partner, or you're a particularly light sleeper, you need a mattress topper with excellent motion isolation. The easiest way to test this is to fill a glass with water and set it in the center of the mattress topper, then apply weight around it. The less the glass moves, the better the motion isolation.

When I conducted this test with the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper, the glass shifted a fair amount, though no water spilled. I put that down to the highly responsive nature of latex. I was worried that such a response would mean I felt my partner's movements throughout the night, but I never did. Even when we were joined by our young son who moves around quite a bit in his sleep, I still didn't stir. If you're really worried about motion isolation, I suggest you invest in a memory foam model, such as the Coop Retreat Mattress Topper: it's made to absorb movement.

Edge support

If you're a stomach sleeper, and you tend to lie on the side of the bed, you'll appreciate a mattress topper with decent edge support. To test it out, I moved my glass of water to the edge of the topper and set a 20-pound weight beside it. Again, the glass tipped and tottered, but no water spilled. I'd still hesitate to recommend the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper for anyone who sleeps on the side of the bed. I'd go for the Nolah Mattress Topper, instead, which has far superior edge support.

Construction and design

The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper features one layer of organic latex foam, topped with quilted organic wool batting. These two layers are enclosed in a moisture-wicking organic cotton cover. Side note: this cover is not removable and must be spot-cleaned. It's worth learning how to clean a mattress topper to make the most of your product.

Practical points

The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper comes with a 180-night sleep trial. You can test your topper through several seasons, in warm and cool weather, to assess its breathability before you commit to the final purchase. You can return your mattress topper for a refund at any time within that timeframe. This mattress Topper is covered by a limited 180-day warranty against manufacturer defects. That doesn't cover staining, discoloration, or abuse of the topper.

How does the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper rate online?

The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper boasts a 4.7 average star rating from almost 200 reviews on the Saatva site. Happy customers praise the transformative effects of the topper, saying it feels like sleeping on a brand-new mattress. Several reviewers noted that they experienced less joint and back pain since using the topper, while others praised its cooling qualities.

The only real downside is the price. The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper retails for a little less than $1,000 for a Queen. That's way more expensive than any other mattress topper I've tested, and hundreds of dollars more expensive than the best affordable mattress. You might be better off buying a brand-new bed to solve your sleep problems.

Is the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper worth it?

At full price, I'd struggle to justify the cost of the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper. It isn't quite as comfortable as the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper, which is our reigning champion for best mattress topper, and comes in at less than half the price.

With that said, I can't discount how well I slept on the Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper. It's soft yet supportive, made from organic materials, and highly breathable to boot. If I saw this topper listed for less in the mattress sales, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it.

How we test mattress toppers

(Image credit: Future / Jamie Davis Smith)

We put a lot of thought into how we test mattress toppers. It's more than a matter of sleeping on the job. We sample mattress toppers for weeks, if not months, to monitor their performance over time and see how well they hold their shape. We expect different things from different types of mattress toppers. The Saatva Organic Quilted Mattress Topper is filled with latex, so I'd expect it to feel firmer and hold its shape better than, say, a pillowtop.

We assess each mattress topper against the same criteria: comfort; quality of construction; breathability; edge support and motion isolation; as well as the all-important cost. You don't have to take our word for it: we round up an assortment of customer reviews from all styles of sleepers to give you the fullest possible picture of what it might be like to use this product.
