This is the most beautiful sight commuters will see today - Killingworth Road is finally open!

This is the sight motorists have waited 22 long and frustrating months for.

For the first time since July 2017, commuters were able to drive down Killingworth Road on their Monday morning commute into Newcastle today.

The busy South Gosforth route - which was used by up to 20,000 vehicles a day before its protracted closure - is now open to southbound traffic only, as well as to pedestrians and cyclists.

A £13.5m project to widen the road and install a new Metro bridge should have been completed by February 2018, but has been plagued by a string of delays.

After the bridge was replaced on schedule, Northern Gas Networks' subsequent efforts to divert gas mains in the area became heavily delayed - with the discovery of asbestos, a "labyrinth of utility pipes and old infrastructure" beneath the city, bad weather and land slippage all blamed for repeated setbacks.

But there is now light at the end of the tunnel, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored in July - although construction work around the site will continue into 2020.

Coun Arlene Ainsley, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for transport and air quality, said: "It's great to have Killingworth Road re-opened after its extended closure due to over-running gas works, which has been frustrating for commuters and people living nearby.

"The phased opening allows people on foot and bikes full access with southbound traffic only. Two-way traffic will be back on the road later in the summer when there is enough space to run traffic safely alongside our construction teams.

"Once complete, the project will have addressed a major bottle-neck and maintenance issue on our highways network and provided more sustainable travel choices to help address air quality issues in the local area."

The one-way reopening of the road has meant some changes to bus routes on Arriva 54, X7 and X8 services travelling towards Newcastle.

The 54 will revert to its previous route via West Farm Avenue, Salters Lane, and Killingworth Road between Quorum and South Gosforth.

The X7 and X8 will also go back to their old routes towards Newcastle via Balliol, Salters Lane and Killingworth Road between Qourom and South Gosforth.
