This is the moment a van blaze closed Wallasey tunnel

A van fire sent plumes of thick black smoke across the Wirral exit of the Wallasey tunnel this afternoon.

Dramatic footage showed the vehicle being driven at the Liverpool end of the tunnel despite being on fire. The driver is reported to have got out safely.

The blaze led to the temporary closure of the Wallasey tunnel in both directions while firefighters dealt with the incident .

A witness to the incident said the driver of the van jumped to safety once he saw the flames.

The fire can first be seen spurting out of the back of the van and forcing open the back doors before migrating around the whole vehicle.

Although the driver attempted to move the van onto the hard shoulder, video shows how the van continued to roll down the hill as the blaze took hold.

Eventually it moved back onto the main carriageway before coming to a stop.

The road was blocked between 12.15pm and 1.15pm while emergency services tackled the fire, leading to traffic queues.

A contraflow was put in place at the Wallasey end of the tunnel for clean up work. There were no injuries.

The tunnel was fully re-opened at around 2.15pm.
