The person who Labour members think should be party leader - and it isn't Sir Keir Starmer

Seven in 10 Labour members believe Andy Burnham would make a better leader of the Labour Party than Sir Keir Starmer, according to a new poll.

Sky News/YouGov interviewed 871 Labour members online between June 22 to 29.

The poll found 69% of Labour Party members would prefer the former MP and now Manchester metro mayor as leader. If Sir Keir loses tomorrow's by-election in West Yorkshire, four in 10 of his members think he should stand down. However, Mr Burnham isn't an MP and therefore not eligible to be party leader.

In the event of a sudden leadership contest drawn from existing MPs, 35% of Labour members said home affairs select committee chair Yvette Cooper would get their first preference.

Shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy wassecond on 13%, deputy leader Angela Rayner on 12%, former leadership contender Rebecca Long Bailey on 11% and left wing stalwart Richard Burgon on 6%.

It found 34% of Labour members think Mr Starmer should stand down against 54% who want him to stay.

Asked how they think Sir Keir is doing, 55% of Labour members said 'well'. This is less than 94% who said Mr Burnham is doing 'well', 87% who said that of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, 68% who said that of Ms Nandy and 67% who said that of Ms Rayner.

Almost two-thirds of Labour members think the leadership should be announcing more detailed policies while 51% want the party to keep most of Mr Corbyn's policy platform from the last election.

There were no Welsh Labour MPs or politicians that featured in Sky's poll.
