This is the historic device that shut down the former Woodford Aerodrome site in Stockport

This is the historic device that was dug up by construction workers on a building site in Stockport .

The bomb squad was scrambled to Chester Road in Woodford just before midday on Wednesday following the discovery.

Police confirmed that the historic device was not deemed viable and has been taken away for further assessment.

A photo shared with the Manchester Evening News showed the device which had been dug up by a ground worker.

Almost 1,000 new homes and apartments are being built on the site which was once home to Woodford Aerodrome and used during the Second World War.

A total of 7,377 Lancaster Bombers were built at the aerodrome as well as Vulcan bombers and Nimrods.

The airfield became part of BAE Systems in 1999 but closed after almost 87 years in 2011 and was unused until taken over by Redrow Homes.

A police cordon and exclusion zone was in place for a number of hours on Wednesday afternoon while the bomb squad assessed the device, which was later deemed not to be viable.

Managing Director for Redrow Homes said: "Groundworkers at Woodford Garden Village uncovered a suspected piece of ordnance while preparing land for new apartments.

"They immediately contacted the relevant authorities.

"As standard procedure we set up an exclusion zone. This area remained within the boundaries of the construction site.

A GMP spokesperson confirmed: "The bomb squad has now left and the device was not deemed viable.

"Enquiries are still ongoing to find out what the device was."
