This is the grenade a man took into a police station in Harpurhey sparking a major response

This is the grenade that was handed in to Harpurhey Police Station, sparking a huge police response on Tuesday afternoon.

The bomb disposal unit swooped to Moston Lane after the device, believed to be from World War Two, was handed in by a member of the public.

Police said the man strolled into the station, at the corner with Upper Conran Street, after spotting the hand grenade in his allotment.

No arrests have been made following the incident.

No evacuations took place, a GMP spokeswoman said.

It is understood the device was moved to a location outside the station, before being removed by the Royal Logistic Corps.

An officer at the scene urged people to leave any potential explosive devices where they find them, before alerting authorites.

He said: "What we’d say is leave it in place and then call us.

"It could endanger other people."

TfGM tweeted about the road closures, saying: "Due to a police incident, Moston Lane in Harpurhey is closed in both directions between Rochdale Road and Ashley Lane.

"Please use an alternate route."
