This Is the End – review

James Franco, Seth Rogen, Emma Watson and many others appear as themselves in this colossally self-indulgent comedy, with a few big, incorrect laughs that outweigh the film's slight tang of obnoxiousness. Just about. The setting is James Franco's fictional ultra-cool modernist house in Los Angeles where he is hosting a massive get-together for civilians and famous people at a ratio of about 8:1. Everyone parties super hard and then there's a massive earthquake, with LA being consumed by fire, as predicted in the book of Revelation. It is the end of the world.

This looks like the world's biggest celeb in-joke combined with a titanic, weed-induced anxiety attack, and it is all too easy to imagine the stars in question having the idea for this film while getting stoned and getting the fear. It is very much not a bonfire-of-the-vanities attack on LA celeb culture, neither is it observational satire in the style of Larry David: just one great big goofy joke. Some funny stuff, but a rental/download only.
