Visitors to Trafalgar Square got a sneak peek of the artwork due to be unveiled on the Fourth Plinth.
Artist Heather Phillipson’s sculpture, titled THE END, will be unveiled later this week.
It is a representation of a giant swirl of whipped cream topped with a cherry, a fly and a drone and will be displayed for two years. The drone will transmit a live feed of the square which people can watch via a website.
The work was due to be unveiled on March 26 but was delayed due to the pandemic.
Phillipson said she wanted her work to take into account the square’s physical shape but also its role in the nation’s politics as the destination of dozens of protests.
She said: “Topped with a giant, unstable load of replica whipped cream, a cherry, a fly and a functioning drone, the plinth becomes a monument to hubris and impending collapse.”
It comes as two of London’s biggest galleries — the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain — today opened their doors after four months.
Londoner Phillipson, 42, is also creating this year’s Tate Britain Commission, its annual large scale immersive work which is displayed in the middle of the gallery, which will be unveiled in Spring.
