This is the 'coffee cup trick' used to catch people out in job interviews

Job interviews are nerve-racking and everyone knows you should always try your best to come prepared - dress smart, smile a lot and act confident.

But one boss has a special "coffee cup trick" to catch people out that isn't exactly a part of the formal interview process.

The Manchester Evening News reports that Trent Innes of software firm Zero Australia uses this simple trick when he interviews people - and it probably never crossed your mind.

He will take interviewees on a walk to the kitchen, where he says he will make sure that they come away with a hot beverage so that he can put them to the test.

After the interview is all done, Trent waits to see if the person offers or attempts to take the empty coffee/tea cup back to the kitchen.

Trent believes it's a foolproof way to get an accurate judge of character within a 30 minute window.

It's simple, if they just leave their cup at the table when they go, they won’t get the job.

Speaking on a podcast, Trent Innes said: "If you do come in and have an interview, as soon as you come in and you do meet me, I will always take you for a walk down to one of our kitchens and somehow you always end up walking away with a drink.

"Then we take that back, have our interview, and one of the things I’m always looking for at the end of the interview is, does the person doing the interview want to take that empty cup back to the kitchen?

"You can develop skills, you can gain knowledge and experience but it really does come down to attitude, and the attitude that we talk a lot about is the concept of 'wash your own coffee cup'."

We have a feeling this trick might divide feelings...if only getting a job was as simple as washing a cup.
