This is the cheapest summer holiday destination in Europe right now

Sunshine Saturday falls this weekend, which means lots of people will be attempting to escape the January blues by booking their summer break, leaving a good few months to pay it off and save up some spends.

If you're in need of a bargainous break this year - and let's face it who isn't? - Then you might want to cast your eye back to Post Office Travel Money's most recent Holiday Costs Barometre, for an indication on where your cash will go furthest.

The report assesses the cheapest places for a beach holiday in Europe by analysing costs associated with a typical day for a family on holiday in 15 popular resorts, in places like Croatia, the Algarve, Greece, and Spain and Turkey.

It factors in the cost of 13 holiday items ranging from a lilo, to a half day on a sun-lounger, suncream, and a meal out for four, including three courses for two adults, two for two children.

It was the Turkish resort of Marmaris, below, which came out as the most purse-friendly option, however, it's important to note that costs for this report were calculated in mid-2018.

The items in the Post Office's "barometer basket" would set you back an estimated £79.91 in the resort, according to Post Office Travel Money, which is over a third less than what it would have cost you in 2017. For example, a glass of wine would set you back a mere £2.29 and a beer £1.63. Last year's fall in costs for Brits on holiday in Turkey was down to a slump in the value of the Turkish lira against the pound.

Marmaris also knocked Bulgaria's Sunny Beach resort off the "cheapest" spot, where the same items would have cost an estimated £83.99.

The next cheapest destination was the Costa del Sol in Spain (£97.09), followed by Crete (£126.53) and Corfu (£132.04) in Greece - the latter of which saw the biggest fall in prices of those in the Eurozone, by 24.2 per cent.

Of the 15 destinations surveyed, Sorrento in Italy was the most expensive, with the basket of items costing an estimated £230.45, more than twice the cost in Marmaris, Sunny Beach and the Costa del Sol.
