This is the cause of the explosion seen and heard on Gower

A loud explosion heard across Swansea Bay and beyond caused quite a stir on Tuesday evening.

The blast near Llanmadoc, Gower, happened at around 5pm.

Locals across the water in Llanelli - and even as far as Burry Port - said that they heard a bang and then a cloud of smoke.

Town resident Allison Hurren said: "Thought it was a quake first of all, then saw the puff of smoke."

Leighton Rogers added: "We saw the white smoke at about 3pm when we were walking on the gravel path in Pwll but didn't hear a bang until 5.30pm."

The area where the blast happened is known for having unexploded Second World War bombs.

John Adams said: "There were two explosions, one at 5pm and a louder one at 5.45pm.

"They were on Landimore Marsh, which has previously been used by the bomb squad for detonating unexploded World War II bombs."

And Helen Jones added: "I passed it when we were coming back from Whitford. I saw two police trucks."

South Wales Police confirmed the incident was a "pre-planned controlled explosion".
