This is the aftermath after a lorry full of chocolate caught fire on the A556

A huge fire broke out on Thursday night on a lorry carrying chocolate which led to a road in Cheshire being closed.

The lorry went up in flames on the A556 at Mere, near Knutsford, at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

Miraculously, the driver managed to escape without suffering any injuries.

There were significant delays around Cheshire as the blaze was brought under control.

Firefighters from three fire stations - Lymm, Stockton Heath and Winsford - were called to tackle the fire.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said when firefighters arrived they found that the lorry "which was carrying chocolate, was well alight, and established early on that the driver was out of the vehicle and safe," it said in a statement.

"The road was shut in both directions while two firefighters, each wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire."

North West Motorway Police confirmed the driver was "safe and well" but warned of "significant delays in both directions" on Thursday night.

A digger was brought in to assist the firefighting by removing goods from the vehicle.

Firefighters were at the scene for around four-and-a-half hours.

It is not clear what caused the blaze.

Inevitably, there were some Tweets involving chocolate puns once people realised the driver was uninjured.
