This is how you actually pronounce Aldi and Lidl

Aldi and Lidl are household names in the UK - but it turns out many people have been pronouncing them wrong.

The budget supermarkets originally started in Germany, with Aldi opening its first UK branch way back in 1990 with Lidl following suit in 1994.

Aldi now has more than 620 stores in the UK and Ireland, with Lidl having more than 800.

But despite their popularity, it turns out some people are still unsure of how to pronounce the brand names.

How to pronounce Aldi

The weird and wonderful world of Aldi shopping

According to Kent Live, some people have been wrongly dragging out the first syllable of Aldi - effectively saying 'all' to rhyme with 'wall' followed by the 'di' pronounced 'dee'.

But according to the retailer, the 'A' should be short and sharp, like Al Murray - Aldi.

How to pronounce Lidl

In Germany, where the brand started, it is pronounced Lee-dl.

The brand wanted that to be the case in the UK, too, but in May 2016 gave in and said they would pronounce it as 'Lee-dell'.

The retailer says you should pronounce it with a short, sharp Li at the start. Li-dl (sounds like little).
