This is how rules on travelling by car will change under lockdown relaxation - and who is affected

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has allowed a slight relaxation in the lockdown rules outlining how far a person may drive from their home.

For almost two months people in the UK have got used to travelling only for essential journeys.

The Prime Minister has now said guidelines in England will be changed so people can now drive to other destinations. But he did not divulge if there would be a limit on the length of trips.

A new Covid Alert System is being set up determined mainly by the reinfection rate and the number of cases, BristolLive reports.

The alert levels will be one to five and the higher the level, the tougher social distancing measures will have to be. The PM said the UK had been in Level Four but “we are now in a position to begin to move in steps to Level Three”.

People will also be allowed to take unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise, sit or sunbathe in parks, drive to other destinations to exercise and play sports with household members from Wednesday.

When can people drive more freely?

Changes do not come in to place until Wednesday, but from then people can drive to other destinations providing social distancing is observed when they are there.

It's important to note, the rules in Wales and Scotland now differ from those in England - so people should not drive across the border to Wales as they would be breaking Welsh lockdown rules and risk a fine.

The same curbs apply to trips to Scotland.
