This is how Manchester celebrated St George's Day in the sunshine

This year's St George's Day parade has been hailed as 'one of the biggest and best' the city has ever hosted.

The annual event, which is now in its 16th year, brought part of the city centre to a standstill on Monday afternoon, as spectators lined the streets to watch.

The parade featured a host of military and emergency services vehicles, red London buses, floats and horse drawn carriages.

Hundreds of dancers, musicians and performers made their way from Miles Platting, along Oldham Road and through the Northern Quarter, where spectators waving the George Cross had gathered to cheer them on.

A stream of scooters brought up the rear of the parade, which culminated in Piccadilly Gardens, before those taking part returned to Miles Platting for a carnival.

Councillor Pat Karney, who walked in the parade, said: "It was one of the biggest and best we've had for years, because of the beautiful Manchester weather.
