This is how children can eat and play football for free this summer

Summer can be a difficult time for parents from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Without the support of school breakfast club, free lunches and after school club, many children living in poverty face a struggle when the school holidays start.

In Bristol, some 40 per cent of primary school children have free school meals, and one in four live in poverty.

A national initiative, called Fit and Fed, will be launched on Friday to help combat that.

It aims to tackle holiday hunger and inactivity during the holidays, and was recently launched by Prince Harry.

The scheme will work with young people in the most deprived areas of the city.

Boxing champion Lee Haskins, TV chefs Sherry and Pat Hart and councillor Asher Craig will be at Netham Park in Barton Hill to officially launch the scheme.

The free event was in South Bristol Sports Centre on Wednesday, where dozens of children took part in the activities.
