This is Dorothy, the 'Queen of Cale Green'... she turns 100 next week, but won't be able to have the big party she hoped for - let's make her birthday special

Friends of a centenarian are asking people to send her 100 birthday cards so she can celebrate in style.

Dorothy Wright will turn 100 on Tuesday (January 5), but won’t be able to have the big party she had hoped for due to the current coronavirus restrictions.

The great grandmother, from Stockport, hasn’t left the house since the pandemic began back in March and hasn’t been able to see her friends and family.

Her pals Neil and Vicki - who run the Stockport town centre cocktail bar Cherry Jam - visit Dorothy every day.

But they want to do something really special for her 100th birthday.

So they’re asking people to send 100 cards to Dorothy so she can celebrate properly.

“She would be blown away to receive so many birthday wishes,” a message on the Cherry Jam Instagram page reads.

“Let's start 2021 on a happy note and let's show some huge love to a wonderful lady!

“Thanks guys I know we can do this together!”

Vicki first got to know Dorothy when dropping off an Avon catalogue at her house.

Dorothy’s cleaner had somehow got stuck in the gate and Vicki had to help prise her out with some washing up liquid.

“It’s a funny story,” she says. “Dorothy says we were meant to meet and become friends.”

Vicki says Dorothy lost her husband and her son a few years ago and had planned a quiet birthday.

“She had said she wasn’t really bothered about her birthday,” she says.

“But she got her letter from the Queen and I think she’s getting more excited about it.

“She’s an amazing lady. She’s hilarious - she tells it how it is.

“She’s so kind and caring and her sense of humour is brilliant.”

Neil adds: “She’s the queen of Cale Green.”

Lots of people already contacted the couple to say they will send cards, but they are keen to make sure Dorothy gets as much attention as possible.

Anyone who would like to send a card to Dorothy is asked to post them to Cherry Jam at 4 Mealhouse Brow, Stockport, SK1 1JP.
