‘This is an Uber. Not a…trash truck’: Lyft driver picks up rider with bags. Then he realizes where she’s going

A viral TikTok from a Philadelphia Lyft driver claims residents are resorting to rideshares to drop off trash at dump sites as the city’s municipal worker strike leaves garbage collection suspended.

AFSCME District Council 33, which represents approximately 9,000 of Philadelphia’s municipal workers, went on strike on Tuesday, July 1st. The strike has impacted trash pickup and many other city services, interrupting the lives of many of the city’s residents.

Mayor Cherelle Parker explained that curbside trash pickup will be suspended during the duration of the strike. She provided a map with collection centers where residents can bring their trash until the strike ends.

However, many residents have expressed that this temporary solution has proven to be tumultuous for residents who don’t have cars.

Lyft for trash runs?

On July 6, a Lyft driver (@ronhassan0) posted a TikTok detailing how Philadelphia residents are adapting to the AFSCME District Council 33 workers’ strike. The video has gained over 743,300 views as of Wednesday.

In the video, the user claims that one of his passengers was using Lyft to drop off their trash at a dump site given the city’s workers are on strike, impacting the operation of the city’s trash removal services.

“They are taking Ubers to the trash dump sites,” the driver claimed.

He explains that he picked up a passenger with numerous trash bags and assumed she was going to the laundromat. When he noticed that the passenger did not have her destination set to a laundromat, he clarified her destination.

She informed him that she was routing to one of the city’s designated dump sites. The bags were full of her trash that was not picked up because of the suspended trash removal services.

“I’m like, ‘Oh no lady, you can’t put no [expletive] trash in my car,” the driver explained.

He recalled that she cancelled her ride shortly after the clarification, before going on to express his frustration at Philadelphia Mayor for allowing the strike to get to this point.

“Bro, Cherelle [expletive] parker… pay these people bro because this is getting [expletive] out of line,” he exclaimed.

The comments were similarly enraged by the city’s response to the strikes

“Neither him nor the lady is wrong it’s the mayor‘s fault,” said one user.

“This whole situation is insane,” wrote another commenter.

“Pay the people it’s getting outta line,” commented a third.
