As a 30-year-old, it seems that adulting has never been this hard before. And I'm not alone in feeling that way. A recent survey by Talker Researcher revealed that people are feeling burnt out earlier in their lives than ever before. Around 25% of people say they're burnt even before they've reached their 30s.
Although hitting 30 is not that bad, it comes with its own challenges and nuances. The page "30 and tired" puts a funny twist on the everyday struggles of young Millennials, really demonstrating why us 30-somethings are so tired. "30 and Tired" is a popular Instagram comedy account created in 2020 by Tyler Mann. As of May 2024, the page currently has 410k followers and can boast about a pretty devoted fanbase that interacts with Mann's posts every day.
Mann himself is a 30-something husband and dad of three from Indiana. "I've always been one to use comedy and laughter to 'lighten the mood' or to help people feel better," Tyler tells us. "So, in 2020, during quarantine, I decided to stop scrolling and start posting with the goal of trying to make people laugh. I thought that if I could change one person's day with a funny meme or video then that was a successful day."

As you scroll through these pics, you might think that being in your 30s is hard. And it's kind of true: there are certain milestones you're expected to hit in your thirties. A stable job, family, perhaps even children, a mortgage, and so on. Our 30s is the time when we're supposed to start adulting, but it's not as easy as it might seem.
Tyler thinks that content about being in your 30s is relatable because most 30-somethings struggle with similar things. "Our thirties are funny, because we join this strange club where no one knows what is going on and we're all trying to figure out how to be adults all while clinging onto the youth of our twenties and I like to find the humor in all of it. Which it turns out, so do a lot of other people!"

For years there have been reports about Millennials struggling financially, not being able to afford homes, owning pets instead of having children, and just generally struggling more than the adults of previous generations.
But Tyler believes that all 30-somethings from each generation have something in common. "I only know what being a 30-something is like in present times, but if I had to guess, I would say that all generations have their differences and their similarities," Tyler told Bored Panda previously.

Mann believes that one unifying thing about being in your 30s is trying to figure out your life. "You still ask yourself so many questions. Should you have gone to college? If you did, did you pick the right major? Did you pick the right career? Is it too late to change careers? Why does my knee always hurt?"

Then, of course, there's the conundrum about having children. "Do I want kids? And if you have kids, you're trying to figure out what does it mean to be a parent and how to be a good one. Some people are married. Some aren't. If you aren't, maybe you love it. Maybe you think it's too late, and on and on and on it goes," the creator of "30 and Tired" told us before.

While it's definitely true that all 30-somethings have similar existential conundrums, Millennials today really are having a harder time than the previous generations, especially in the U.S. For example, a 2021 study found that Millennials and Gen X aren't doing as well as Boomers did at the same age in terms of home ownership, debt, and retirement planning.

Experts say that the most obvious contributing factor to Millennials struggling so much financially is student debt. Boomers, for example, owned homes or had retirement plans mid-career (ages 39 to 54). Gen X and Millennials weren't able to due to crippling student debt.

But finances aren't the only area where people in their 30s are struggling. Our 30s is the time when we start digging deeper into ourselves and try to improve ourselves. Licensed psychotherapist Annie Wright, LMFT, points out that cracks in our emotional foundations start to show more once we're in our 30s and 40s.

People who might have a relational trauma background might have maladaptive behaviors regarding vulnerability, fear, or loneliness. Some might be unable to emotionally regulate themselves or express feelings in healthy ways. Others might struggle with anxious or avoidant attachment styles.
