This Indian restaurant in Leeds is offering free food to help muslims break their fast during Ramadan

An Indian restaurant in Leeds is offering free food and drink to help muslims break their fast during Ramadan.

Mumtaz, in Leeds Docks, is inviting muslims and non-muslims alike to celebrate Iftar with them each day at sunset - the time when muslims are able to eat and drink following a day of fasting.

The restaurant says the offer will run for the whole month, until Ramadan ends in early June.

The restaurant said: "From everyone at Mumtaz Leeds we really wish you well in this month.

"We pray that you come visit us during Iftaari/sunset when we will offer complimentary food and drinks for everyone (muslim or not muslim) in celebration of the month and also as a source of reward for us."

Ramadan sees millions of believers abstain from eating or drinking anything from dawn until sunset.

Fasting includes no food, drink, sex, smoking or swearing.

The fast is also known as sawm. The act of fasting is said to cleanse the soul and bring believers closer to God.

It also teaches people about self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate.

Just before dawn families will break their fast, this is called suhur -  and at sunset people will again gather for fast-breaking, this meal known as Iftar.

According to tradition, Mohammed broke his fast by eating three dates, so the fruit is usually the first thing people will eat.
