The announcement that Kanye West would be running for president in 2020 at the Video Music Awards was one of the highlights of the evening, but nobody knew exactly why he decided to make the statement after a poignant, serious speech. But now it looks like the mystery might be solved.
Twitter user @0nlyPablo shared a video on the social media platform of him standing in the crowd at the very edge of the stage while Kanye was delivering his speech, which he gave after accepting the MTV Video Vanguard Award for contributions to music and culture.
During a brief pause, the man shouts “Kanye for president!” and gets a laugh from the people around him.
Then, apparently hearing the remark, Kanye utters the (now-iconic) line “And yes, as you probably could have guessed by now, I have decided in 2020 to run for president,” causing the crowd to erupt with cheers.

Although the rapper speaks about every topic under the sun, he didn't give any context as to why he wants to run the country, but this video suggests he was confirming what the audience, and, yes, the general public are desperate for.
So there you go. When West is sitting in The White House and Kim Kardashan-West is the FLOTUS, this is the guy you should thank.
