Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to ensure obedience, even if that means going several steps back in American history. The United States president is now threatening all those who oppose him with the Insurrection Act, highlighting that he would invoke it if his words are not followed verbatim. This comes after his repeated attempts to deploy National Guard troops in specific regions, such as Illinois and Oregon, were shot down or temporarily halted through court procedures.
Addressing the press on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the Oval Office, President Donald Trump spoke about the alleged lawlessness in the cities in which he and his government have failed to ensure compliance due to pushback. He said:
“We have an Insurrection Act for a reason. If I had to enact it, I’d do that. If people were being killed and courts were holding us up, or governors or mayors were holding us up, sure, I’d do that.”
Naturally, Trump’s comments about invoking the Insurrection Act did not sit well with the people, especially those who have been vocal about their criticism of him. Many called him out for his dictatorial practices. He was threatening Democratic leaning states with consequences as they were refusing to give in to his irrational demands. A prominent person to speak up was Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who, in a press conference, shredded Trump into pieces by speaking hard truths about him and his government. He said:
“This escalation of violence is targeted and intentional and premeditated. The Trump administration is following a playbook: cause chaos, create fear and confusion, make it seem like peaceful protesters are a mob by firing gas pellets and tear gas canisters at them. Why? To create the pretext for invoking the Insurrection Act so that he can send military troops to our city.”
He continued speaking while highlighting Trump’s disturbing trend of normalising military presence in cities, with troops reporting directly to him.
