This dog was rescued by firefighters after falling down 10ft hole near river

A dog had to be rescued by firefighters after falling down a 10ft hole in Stockport.

Eight-year-old Joe was trapped inside the old pump station at Vernon Park for more than an hour before crews managed to hoist him out by hooking his collar.

Miraculously the Ridgeback/Staffy-cross escaped his ordeal without serious injury - and then posed for photos afterwards with his rescuers.

Fire crews were called to the park at around 8.15am on Saturday morning.

Owner Michelle Smith, 45, had been walking Joe with a friend and his dog along the river walk when the two pets ran off.

"We got to the start of the river walk and there's this old pump station down there," she said.

Manchester weather this week: Sunny to start with, but it's going to change

This 16-year-old girl has gone missing from home in Little Hulton - police are 'extremely concerned'

"The gate is never normally open but for some reason this time it was.

"The dogs went off down there, Dave's dog came back but Joe didn't.

"I went to look for him but I couldn't see him anywhere - I was terrified I thought he'd fallen in the river.

"But then I heard him crying, I looked down and he was stuck in the hole.

"He must have jumped in and fallen down."

Michelle, who lives in Bredbury, called GMFRS for help.

Several crews - including a Tactical Response Unit - turned up and checked the pump station for any signs of gas before beginning their rescue mission.

"It took them an hour to rescue Joe but they were amazing," Michelle added.

"They tried to climb down the hole to him at first but they couldn't fit, they even tried taking off their gear.

"In the end they got a pole with a hook and hooked it under his collar, then used rope to hoist him up.

"Incredibly he was okay. He had us worried because he didn't move for an hour so we thought he'd broken his legs.

"He's got cuts and bruises and is a bit in shock but luckily he's fine.

"I think I'm more of a mess about it than him!"

Michelle says she could not be more grateful to the firefighters for getting Joe out safely.

She said: "I really want to thank them for what they did.

"They were amazing. They rescued Joe and really looked after me because I wasn't in a good state.

"They couldn't have done enough and I'm so grateful."

A spokesman for GMFRS confirmed: "We were called to the scene at 8.12am following reports a dog had fallen down a 10ft hole close to the river and was trapped in an old pump station.

"Firefighters took gas readings inside to make sure there was no gas in there.

"Two crews and a Technical Response Unit attended."
