This Day In Music - 31 August

31 August 2002 - NASA announced that Lance Bass (right), singer with *NSYNC, was to become the first celebrity astronaut. His $23.8 million (£14 million) place on a Russian Soyuz module would make him, at 23, the youngest person to go into orbit. Bass actually ended up not taking part in the flight after failing to pay for his ticket.

Bass is currently appearing in Hairspray on Broadway. His autobiography, Out Of Sync, is published in October and promises a 'fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the music industry' and his decision to come out last year, at the age of 27.

More importantly, Bass has revealed that after the publication of Out of Sync he will renew his efforts to go into space.
