30 September 1967 - BBC Radio 1 was launched in the UK. Former Radio Caroline DJ Tony Blackburn was the first presenter on air. The Move's 'Flowers In The Rain', was the first record played. Blackburn, who was at the station for 17 years, was the inspiration for Paul Whitehouse's cheesy comedy DJ Smashie on Fab FM. More recently he returned to the public eye after becoming the first winner of I'm A Celebrity. . . Get Me Out Of Here in 2002.
