'This country has probably had enough' Boris Johnson rejects holding referendum on net zero

Boris Johnson has rejected the idea of holding a referendum on achieving net zero carbon emissions in the UK by the middle of the century.

The Prime Minister rubbished calls from several Conservative MP s to hold a public vote on CO2 emissions by 2050.

It comes after a YouGov poll showed a large proportion of the public said they were in favour of the idea.

According to the survey 42 per cent of adults said they supported a vote, while 30 per cent were against it.

28 per cent of those asked said they did not have a preference.

One of the main objectives of the summit is to attempt to get countries around the world, especially developed nations, to commit to net zero by 2050.

Asked during a press conference whether net zero could be put to a vote, Johnson said that although it was a "brilliant suggestion" he was too keen on the idea.

He added: "As for your suggestion of a referendum. I think this country has probably had enough referendums to be getting on with for a while.

"That's my general view on the matter."
