This colossal cat is double her ideal weight - now she's off to pet fat club

This colossal cat is double her ideal weight - she's being sent to pet fat club to tackle the problem.

Sparkx, who lives in Moss Side, has eaten and slept her way to a massive 6.95kg.

She's been stealing food from her feline housemates while her owner is off-guard.

But she's now about to embark on a six-month diet and exercise challenge.

The Pet Fit Club, run by PDSA, has chosen two-year-old Sparkx to take part in its national competition.

The podgy puss will get a tailored plan to help her shed the pounds.

Sparkx's owner Christina Jacobs, 28, said she hadn't realised how big her pet had become until her vet pointed it out.

How to help your pet lose weight

She said it hit home that she needed to do something 'drastic' to help.

"The biggest difficulty with Sparkx is that she steals food from my two other cats", Christina said.

"I try to make sure they eat separately but it’s not always easy.

“I’m really excited to be part of Pet Fit Club and I’m hoping it will help Sparkx to have a better quality of life and she can live to a ripe old age.

"I can’t wait to see her transformation!”

The Pet Fit Club will give Christina a microchip feeder so Sparkx will only be able to eat her own food.

Her plan will be overseen by vets and nurses at Manchester PDSA Pet Hospital on Warwick Road South.

Zoe Walton, a PDSA vet nurse, said: “Pet obesity is an epidemic that is impacting the lives of millions of pets across the country.

“It is estimated that up to 40% of UK cats and dogs are overweight or obese.

"But with the help of PDSA and Pet Fit Club, Sparkx and Christina are making the necessary diet, exercise and lifestyle changes to help get Sparkx down to a healthier weight."

The two-year-old cat will compete against eight other hefty cats and dog from across the UK.

Together, the pets weigh 197kg and need to lose nearly 80kg.

Some of the other animals taking part include Percy the Pug from Glasgow who's huge waistline has left him struggling to breath and Missi the Bulldog from Walsall who loves ice cream.

The winner will get a year's supply of healthy food and an animal-friendly holiday.
