'This cannot happen' - Joelinton delivers VAR verdict after Newcastle United's weekend frustration

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is pleased to see action being taken over the catalogue of VAR errors from the latest round of Premier League fixtures. VAR endured it’s worst weekend to date since its introduction in 2019 with controversy surrounding a number of matches.

Newcastle themselves were on the wrong end of arguably the poorest decision of the weekend, with video assistant referee Lee Mason deciding to disallow an own goal from Tyrick Mitchell. Joe Willock was penalised for colliding with Palace Crystal Palace’s Vicente Guaita during the incident, despite replays clearly indicating the Magpies midfielder was pushed into the goalkeeper by Mitchell.

PGMOL have since come out and confirmed that there will be investigations into how the officials came to their conclusions for that decision, and also West Ham’s late disallowed goal at Chelsea. Joelinton believes that is a step in the right direction, but equally, would not be against removing it from football completely if these errors cannot be eradicated.
