This busy Salford road is set to be resurfaced with new speed bumps by Christmas

A Salford road is set to be resurfaced with new speed bumps, traffic signs and street lighting to be installed by Christmas.

The work on Madams Wood Road in Little Hulton, which will involve road closures, is due to get underway by October and will take around two months.

Bollards and chicanes currently on the road will be removed and there will be a 20mph limit put in place along the carriageway and other surrounding roads.

The project is part of the Salford Bolton Network Improvement programme which aims to benefit more than 100,000 residents living in the area.

This scheme in Little Hulton aims to improve public transport facilities, safety and capacity on the road, which is home to Hilton Lane Primary School.

It will cost Salford City Council around £295,000 with the remaining costs to be covered by Greater Manchester's Growth Fund.

This week, the council's procurement board agreed to appoint construction company Bethell Ltd to carry out the work at a cost of £334,161.58.

In a statement on social value sent during the tendering process, the Kearsley-based company said: "Bethell is part of the local community of Salford. It is our community and the company is fully committed to ensuring that prospers.

"Throughout our 155 year history, Bethell has consistently employed local resources to sustain our growth and development. This continues to this day.

"Our head office is based only three miles from Madams Wood Road making us a true local contractor, employing local people and delivering local economic and social benefits for the community.

"We currently directly employ 223 people, of whom 13 pc reside within the Salford conurbation, paying local council taxes and using their income to sustain local economic activity and businesses.

"Bethell shall work with the council to promote local employment opportunities where necessary and facilitate learning and development needs of the Salford workforce throughout the works."

The company has committed to ensuring that at least one of its current operational apprentices is appointed to the Madams Wood Road project.

The contract period is due to commence in October and end in January.

Subject to approvals by Transport for Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, work should be completed by Christmas.

Further information on road closures and a shuttle bus service will follow.
