This bus station has been rated the worst in Greater Manchester - but no-one seems to know why

Anyone who used the old station under the Arndale will remember just how grim catching a bus could be.

Choking on diesel fumes, taking your life in your hands to reach your platform, it could be a pretty dismal experience.

Luckily, since then Greater Manchester's bus stations have improved immeasurably.

But you can't please all the people all the time - especially people on the internet.

And that certainly seems to be true in the case of Altrincham Interchange.

Opened in 2014 at a cost of £19m, it's modern, light, airy and spotlessly clean.

But it's also the lowest rated bus station in Greater Manchester.

None of the 24 stations listed on the Transport for Greater Manchester website, rated at least five times, has a worse score than the 2.7 out of five Altrincham gets on Google's review function.

For many people that will seem very odd, so on Thursday morning I went along to ask passengers what they thought.

Norma Taylor uses the station every week to visit her grandchildren.

As soon as I explained why I was there she began sticking for up for it.

"What’s wrong with it?," she asked looking around.

"It’s always clean and tidy. The buses are always on time.

"There are lot of information boards, loads of seating.

"A few times when I’ve been here about 4pm there’s been lots school kids hanging around, but I’ve never seen them causing problems.

"It’s a big improvement on the old station. It was like three aisles, really old-fashioned.

"This is so much better.”

Another passenger stood nearby didn't want to give his name but said he used the station nearly everyday.

And he was equally surprised at its poor rating.

“There's nowt wrong with it, nothing at all," he said.

"The buses are regular, it's clean.

"Everything's better now than what it used to be, everything's moving forward."

Sitting on a bench waiting for the 88 bus to Wilmslow, Ian Hill also remembers the old bus station and says the new interchange is a huge improvement.

"I've never had any problems with this bus station whatsoever," he said.

"It's spotless. There's a chap comes rounds with a polisher cleaning the floor every day.

"You quite often see the police in here and they're excellent, there's CCTV everywhere.

"The old bus station was really run down. It wasn't covered in like this, there was a roof, but no sliding doors so it was open to the elements."

And Della Riley, who's waiting for a bus to visit her mum in Timperley, is equally surprised.

"I can't believe it - I can't fault it," she says.

"I've never had a problem with this station whatsoever.

"It doesn't even compare to what it was like before.

"The old station wasn't under cover, it wasn't as clean, you had to cross quite a lot of walkways to get to it.

"This is a big, big improvement.

"It's so clean. The staff are great, the bus drivers are very, very good.

"Who's making these comments? They want to go to a few other stations then come back here."

Proof then, if proof were needed, that you can't always believe everything you read online.
