This bride surprised her groom with a half-and-half Bristol City wedding cake

When you’re getting married to an absolutely devout Bristol City fan, but want a beautifully traditional wedding cake, there’s only one thing for it.

So when Nicki Done got hitched to her beau Shaun Morris, she arranged for a special surprise for her Robins-mad husband to be.

Like a half-and-half pizza where one person likes pepperoni and the other likes Haribo, Nicki persuaded her friend and cake-maker extraordinaire Sally Gough to create something special.

Half of Sally’s creation is a traditional, delicate white fondant icing, complete with delicate butterflies, roses, pearl beads and ribbons.

Under that beautiful decoration, there were three different flavours of sponge, too.

The other half, in truth, has more of the vibe of an eight-year-old boy’s birthday cake than a traditional wedding cake.

It’s bright red and with pretty much every badge Bristol City have had over the years in icing form, together with a few little footballs. The current badge - changed in a big fanfare for this season - takes pride of place at the top of the three-tier cake.

The cake was a surprise for Shaun, but both the couple and all the guests decided it was perfect.

For Shaun, 54, is a well-known Bristol City fanatic. Until a couple of years ago, he and Nicki ran the Masonic pub, a City hostelry in Bedminster’s North Street, and he’s been a season ticket holder of many years standing.

The couple took over the Rodney Stoke Inn, in the village between Cheddar and Wookey in Somerset, about five months ago, and it was the perfect venue for their wedding reception after the couple were married down in Devon.

“Shaun is a huge Bristol City fan, I can’t begin to explain how much,” said Nicki, 49. “My friend made the cake, and it was a surprise for him. I guess the message was saying ‘you can have your half, and I’ll have my wedding cake, and we’ll both be happy with it.

“We got married secretly down in Devon the other day and had a party back at the Rodney Stoke on Saturday, where the cake was unveiled.

“The spelling mistake - where one of the badges says ‘footbal’ - was a joke between Sally and me,” she explained.

“Sally did an amazing job on the cake, and it works really well. He was delighted with it when he first saw it,” she added.
